What I would never tell him is—things could get complicated. For reasons.Let me know if you want the job. With great reluctance,Owen#AdorableHowObsessedYouAreWithMeDear Mr. Brodie,Thank you for your email. Please inform Sam that I like him very much and would love to be his nanny and accompany him on your terrible joke of a stand-up tour.I can assure you—things will not get complicated. For many, many reasons.Primarily because Owen Brodie isn’t funny, and he can suck it.Out of financial desperation and a fondness for your son,Frankie#GetOverYourselfPrettyBoy* This is a 65,000 word standalone single dad/enemies to lovers steamy romantic comedy with crossover characters from the Name in Lights series.Book Funny Business (The Brodie Brothers Book 1) Review :
The lightest, funniest book I've read all year certainly deserves a 5-star rating... even if it's not a cut and dry one. I loved the playfulness of this exceedingly low angst romance, and I loved the sexual tension. It's got likable characters and such a unique vibe; it's so, so easy to tell that it's written by Loring. This is the perfect jumping in point for new fans - the story kicks off a brand new series of standalones, but there are (brief) appearances from some old favorites. I'll be the first to admit that the relationship is shallower than I'd like and the emotional connection is lacking, but I had a great time reading this - and it absolutely flew by.The story follows Owen, a single dad whose career in comedy is really starting to come together. Three years ago, Owen was heckled by a drunken (yet sexy) fan while telling some tired jokes about his failing marriage. And he's been heckled by the same woman on social media since. When they finally meet face-to-face, Owen is at a very different place in his life, and his heckler is the potential new nanny to his son. Chemistry sparks between them immediately, and Owen knows that it's a bad idea to take Frankie on tour with him - they are sure to cross some lines, and that might not be the best thing for either of them.Loring has such a distinctive writing style that's incredibly easy to binge. I had no trouble reading this in one sitting, and I had a smile on my face the whole time. There definitely could've been more relationship development and I think some of the humor could've been replaced with more swoon, but it was such a sweet/sexy read. There are great family moments paired with steamy, intense scenes, and I loved the combination. Owen is such a good hero, and I loved how strong Frankie is. They had some combustible chemistry, and make a perfect pair. It's not my favorite from the author, but it does an outstanding job of introducing this new series - and I am so ready for more. "You’re the setup and the story arc and the main character and the conflict and the punchline."I was hoping for a sweet, cute, steamy read with a lot of banter. And that's what I got, because this is Kayley Loring. And then those last few chapters wrecked me.Owen Brody. The model, the stand-up comedian. I always feel comedians are a lot sadder that what they seem. They make people laugh, but they always give me this weird sadness vibe. Owen gave off that vibe too. He's full of himself. He obviously loves his kid more than anything in the world. And he may have a great career and feel on top of the world, but he's definitely missing something.Frankie is a woman trying to make her way in the world. She dreams of making people laugh. She has really cool jokes. She has an attitude I love, and a level of sarcasm to die for. I want to be her. What she doesn't have is a break, one that can kickstart her career. They sort of meet when Owen's doing a show, and she heckles him. Seriously, I loved it. But because he was on the stage, and because there were a lot of people there, he didn't actually see her. She didn't need to, because he's famous, so she kept heckling him on Twitter. And he kept replying. The banter and the chemistry between these two were... I need something that means "perfect", but is actually "perfect times infinity". Thesaurus is not being very helpful! When they finally meet, he's never seen her before, and she’s there to apply for a nanny job. And, surprise, the banter between them is even better when they're face to face. I love them as enemies. I love how much they kind of really dislike each other, simply because they're sort of very similar and they sort of complete each other. I could see that, they obviously couldn't.Once they finally do something about all the tension going on, it's on. These two are fire. I think my Kindle may be experiencing some side effects from the scene in the limo.At the same time, they're opening up. You can see how vulnerable Frankie really is behind all the sarcasm, and what an awesome guy Owen is behind all the hotshot-ness of him.In the middle of all of this is the Brodie family. They're incredible. His parents and his two brothers, and the texts between them, were amazing. Sam, Owen's kid, was a lot more insightful and perceptive than grown-ups gave him credit for. And their jokes, and Frankie's made-up songs, and the pop culture references to so many things I love just wrapped up this book in a perfect little package that was just bang on for me."I’ll never get over myself, and I will never, ever get over you."The last few chapters. I'm not sure what to say about them. I went from laughing, to feeling happy, to crying these really weird tears – those I-wish-this-could-happen-in-real-life-and-maybe-to-me-please tears. It was the perfect finish to a book that has so much laughter in it, but also so much heart.I give this book ALL the winking emojis and emoticons.
